It’s something no adult should ever have to worry about, but far too many do: how they will afford the incontinence products they need.

A Common Occurence

Incontinence affects many older individuals, research shows, but many don’t seek treatment for it – even though there are simple and effective methods to deal with the problem. Often, people are embarrassed, or simply view it as an unavoidable part of getting older. An estimated 13 million Americans have suffered from urinary incontinence.

A Physical & Emotional Issue

There are various conditions that can lead to incontinence among adults: weak or overactive bladder muscles; weak pelvic floor muscles; nerve damage due to diseases like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s or diabetes; arthritis, an enlarged prostate and others. On top of the physical effects of incontinence, individuals also grapple with feelings of depression, isolation and feelings of low self-esteem as a result of the condition.

A Costly Problem

In 2010, the average annual cost for fecal incontinence alone was about $4,110 per person in the United States among adults who suffered from incontinence for more than a year. Of that, $2,353 was related to direct medical and non-medical expenses, while the other $1,549 was indirect costs associated with a loss of productivity. The more severe someone’s incontinence is, the more it costs them.

How We Are Helping:

Many people view incontinence as something they need to manage on their own. But for low-income individuals, cost can be a severe barrier to getting adult incontinence products. Add that potential embarrassment to the shame they may feel for needing the supplies in the first place, and it’s easy to see how some end up going without.

Expansion

On a limited basis, we have been distributing incontinence products to adults, connecting with those in need through our existing community partners. But we know more needs to be done, which is why The Diaper Bank of Connecticut is extending our impact through our Rise program.

Partnership

With generous in-kind support from Because Market valued at $300,000, we are working to further expand our efforts. We are working to create and manage strategic partnerships and pipelines, and identifying the most efficient ways to distribute incontinence products to those who need them.

Dedication

We are dedicated to giving individuals access to basic needs throughout their lifespan and, for many adults, incontinence products are a very basic – and very personal – need that no one should have to go without.
